What is Periodontitis?

Periodontal disease (periodontitis) represents the chronic inflammatory condition affecting the supporting tissues of the teeth, namely the gums and bone. When the inflammation is limited to the gums, the condition is called gingivitis, whereas if the inflammation extends to the bone, we refer to it as periodontitis (formerly known as periodontosis). Literally, periodontitis means ‘around the tooth.’ In conclusion, the disease affects both the gums and bone: the bone undergoes resorption (melting), and the gums follow the bone by receding or remaining in place, even if the bone is resorbed.

The main causes of periodontitis development are: pathogenic agents ( specifically the PA bacteria ), genetic predisposition related to the immune system, poor oral hygiene, smoking, systemic diseases, and stress.

Periodontitis can be prevented by following proper oral hygiene practices, which include

01.

Brushing teeth twice a day

Brushing teeth twice a day helps remove plaque and food particles, reducing the risk of cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. It also promotes oral hygiene, supporting overall dental health and preventing potential dental issues in the long term.
02.

Daily use of dental floss

Daily use of dental floss helps remove plaque and debris from between teeth and along the gumline, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. It promotes optimal oral hygiene, complementing toothbrushing to maintain healthy teeth and gums for long-term dental health.
03.

Utilizing mouthwash

Utilizing mouthwash helps to reach areas of the mouth that may be missed by brushing and flossing, reducing the buildup of bacteria and preventing bad breath. It can also assist in maintaining overall oral hygiene by providing additional protection against cavities and gum disease when used as part of a comprehensive oral care routine.
04.

Regular visit to the dentist

Regular visits to the dentist are crucial for detecting and addressing oral health issues early, preventing them from worsening and requiring more extensive treatment. Additionally, dental check-ups and cleanings help maintain optimal oral hygiene, promoting long-term dental health and preventing potential complications.
